Empowering Lives – NDIS Participant Success Stories in Newcastle & Lake Macquarie

Empowered Community Services, based in Cardiff, proudly supports NDIS Participants across Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Our social and community access programs, as well as respite supports, help individuals achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives. Below are a number of Empowered success stories that showcase how our NDIS services empower Participants to build skills, friendships, and independence in the Newcastle & Lake Macquarie region.
Darren – From Finding a Home to Launching a Career
Darren was Empowered’s very first Participant, joining in 2017 with the goal of living independently. With support from our team, he applied for housing and moved into his first home, achieving a major milestone.
Building on this success, Darren set his sights on further education. With guidance from Empowered’s Support Workers, he completed two TAFE courses in Information Technology, Networking and Digital Media – expanding his skills and qualifications.
Darren has since achieved meaningful employment in IT. This journey from securing housing to starting a new career highlights how quality NDIS support services and Darren’s determination paved the way for an independent life.
(Congratulations, Darren – great job!)

Susan – Connecting through Creativity and Social Supports
Susan, a proud Gamilaroi woman, joined our Monday community sewing group with the goal of exploring her creativity and making friends. Through this social support program, she found an outlet to express herself and connect with peers her age.
By attending the sewing group every week and giving 100% to her projects, Susan has created beautiful handmade items, like the butterfly-patterned bag she’s holding in her photo, and forged meaningful friendships along the way.
Susan has truly smashed her goals of creativity and connection. Her story showcases the power of social support in helping NDIS Participants build skills and relationships in a supportive environment.
Jackson – Taking Steps Toward Independent Living (Respite Journey)
Jackson’s NDIS goals included living independently in an environment where he can thrive, build new skills, and enjoy the outdoors. Recently, he took an exciting first step toward that goal by completing his first walkthrough of the Empowered respite house.
By experiencing a short stay in a respite setting, Jackson is learning firsthand what independent living could be like. This respite support opportunity allows him to gain confidence and daily living skills in a safe, staffed home – all while staying close to his community in Lake Macquarie.
Jackson’s journey is well underway, and we’re proud to support him as he moves closer to independent living. His progress illustrates how respite and transitional supports can pave the path for greater independence for NDIS Participants.

More Information about Empowered Community Services
Empowered Community Services was founded by Jonathon Power in 2017. Inspired by his own experiences growing up with both parents living with lifelong disabilities, Jonathon was drawn to the disability sector early on. While studying psychology, he worked as a Disability Support Worker, mostly in Supported Independent Living, supporting people with complex needs to access the community. It quickly became his favourite part of the job.
He was often tasked with taking individuals out and about, helping them get out of the house, engage in the community, and do the things that mattered to them. But over time, he saw firsthand how time and funding constraints often cut those experiences short. People weren’t getting the level of access they deserved. And even more frustrating was seeing unfamiliar support staff sent in from other services, people who didn’t know the individuals, didn’t understand their needs, and struggled to build real rapport.
That’s where the idea for Empowered was born.
Jonathon saw a gap, a need for something different. He thought, If I can do this well every day, surely I can build a team that can do the same. A team that understands the value of consistency, trust, and community connection, especially for people with complex support needs.
