NDIS Support Coordination

What is a Support Coordinator?

A Support Coordinator is someone who can assist you in kickstarting your NDIS plan!

If you haven’t heard of a Support Coordinator before, that’s okay. You might have heard the role referred to as a COS or a Coordinator of Supports.

A Support Coordinator is a specialised worker who understands the NDIS and the different services you can access with your funds. They work in partnership with you and your family, helping you understand the NDIS, how it works and how you can achieve your goals. They also work in collaboration with other disability service providers. You can talk about any concerns or worries about the NDIS or related issues like housing.

But why do I need a Support Coordinator?

Your Support Coordinator is your main point of contact for the NDIS. They are there to help you access a range of supports and services, including things like equipment, therapies and education.

So, should I ask for one if I’m eligible for a Support Coordinator? Everyone can ask for a Support Coordinator. The sooner you ask for a Support Coordinator, the better, as they can help you access support and services.

If you would like more information about Support Coordination or would like to speak with someone from our COS team, give the Empowered Community Services office a call today.

Our Support Coordinators will work closely with you to ensure you get the most out of your NDIS plan. They will help you understand and implement your plan in a way that suits you. We are committed to listening to your needs and preferences and providing options for NDIS and mainstream supports that best match your needs. They will also help build your ability to exercise choice and control, coordinate support and access your local community. Our Support Coordinators will focus on supporting you in developing skills and directing your life, including working with you to find and connect to mainstream services such as employment services, government departments, and advocacy services should you require them.

Specialist Support Coordination

Specialist Support Coordination is time-limited support coordination, within a specialist framework warranted by high risks in Participants situation, to address barriers and reduce complexity in the environment, assisting to connect with supports, and build capacity and resilience.

Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination are very similar. However, there is a key difference that Specialist Support Coordination will be funded where there are additional high or complex needs in your situation and will be a qualified and experienced practitioner to assist you to address barriers and reduce complexity. Specialist Support Coordinators will support you to manage challenges in your support environment, including health, education, or justice services. Specialist Support Coordination aims to reduce barriers to implementing or using your NDIS plan.
